Well Eleanor
The family finally got to keep the promise I made to you when Greg, Charlie, Pascoe, Gene, Mara, Julie, Paul, Dad and I flew out to Iceland on 17th October, with the hope of seeing the Aurora Borealis and to scatter some of your ashes to commemorate your second anniversary, Monday 21st October. This has been such an awesome experience for us all and we have each been excited and moved by the spiritual raw beauty and elements that Iceland brings, from the steaming and exploding geysirs, the glaciers, walking down to the Kerid Crater, walking behind a waterfall at the mighty Seljialandfoss and walking on Blackbeach with its' volacanic black sand, basalt columns and powerful sneaker waves.
You were with us every step of the way, just as we wished, should you still be in this world. So instead, we carried you in our hearts to all these wonderful places. Back home, your family and friends were thinking of you too.
On your anniversary, the weather was cold, wet and windy and as we braced ourselves for a long walk at Thingvellir National Park we laughed at the thought of what you would make of having to go for a walk in these conditions! Oh yes, there were a few big hills to climb too. Thingvellur is where the tectonic plates have parted at Silfra and where the first Parliament was created - a most fascinating place.
In the afternoon we found a secluded spot by the lake where we scattered your ashes on the shoreline just as it started to snow. We read some of your childhood poems that Pascoe and Gene joined in with and celebrated the wonderful times we had shared with you with a glass of bubbly and a big "Cheers" to you. This was the most perfect, peaceful place with magnificent views taking in the majesty of Thingvellir and the lake.
All of the time we were in Iceland we were hoping for a glimpse of Aurora and Charlie and Paul were our lookout team every evening, checking their apps and the sky which remained stubbornly cloudy.
On the final evening, the sky was clear and loaded with stars. There was a glimpse of some green and pink in the sky which grew stronger by the minute, introducing more colours to the ribbons across the sky and there was Aurora Boralis and what a show she gave us. We were all hugging and smiling and recording the event. The boys had been bundled out of bed and into their outdoor gear to enjoy this phenomenon on the coldest of nights and thrilled by it all.
Thanks for arranging this as the grand finale my lovely. We will keep these memories and you in our hearts always. 💖
